Research Impact & Significance – Organic crystals suspended in solution emit a greenish-blue color. This organic molecule was used for studies in enhancing dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) efficiencies. The process responsible for this phenomenon, known as photon upconversion via triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA-UC), makes use of small molecules to convert two low energy photons into one higher energy photon through the annihilation of triplet states to form a higher energy singlet state species. TTA-UC has recently been shown by our group to be a viable method of harvesting lower energy photons that typically cannot be utilized by a traditional DSSC and upconverting them for direct enhancement of the device’s current output. Theoretical studies have yielded efficiency increases upwards of 11% with the integration of TTA-UC into the device architecture.
