Research Impact & Significance -The development of organic fluorophores has direct application in imaging of biological systems and organic light emitting materials. The use of organic fluorophores in biology has aided in the investigation of many sub-cellular processes through the detection of specific analytes within cells. By developing new dyes with specific spectral overlaps and improving on specificity and binding to ions, the field is able to support many biologists in their areas of interest. In addition, the field also lends itself to aiding material science work by creating new dyes for the development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). By increasing the emission efficiency and processability of many dyes used in displays and diodes the field can help decrease the environmental impact of many electronic devices as well as increase energy conservation and device lifetimes.
