Research Impact & Significance – We examine the process of natural oil and gas seepage in the Gulf of Mexico. This includes determining bubble size and release rates, migration pathways, and behavior of benthic fauna. Hydrocarbons (e.g. gas and oil) are a source of energy that feed the ecosystem in the deep ocean where no light energy is available. This research is important to help us understand some of the less known contributors of carbon in the global carbon cycle.
