Research Impact & Significance – Understanding and optimizing dye-sensitized solar cells stability could allow for an alternative solar cell that is both cheaper and more efficient at converting light into electricity. The picture shows an incoming laser light irradiating a cuvet containing a semiconductor film that is bind with sensitizers. Upon exposure to high intensity light (445nm laser), the sensitizers-semiconductor bondage is weakened thus causing the sensitizers start falling off from the film. This experiment characterizes the desorption rate of such sensitizer. The beam of light you see in the cuvet is in fact the emission of the desorbed sensitizer in the solution. This experiment can ultimately lead us to design a more durable dye-sensitized solar cell.
